Stellar collaborative disc from Ohio icon.

Guided By Voices founder and solo artist Robert Pollard has long evinced a working man's dedication to his craft, turning out proper LP's and side projects with remarkable regularity. His latest finds him joining forces with latter-day GBV bassist Chris Slusarenko and Decemberists' drummer John Moen, as the Boston Spaceships. Less proggy than Pollard's recent solo material, at times the songs sound like lost tracks from his legendary mid-90's purple patch (the very GBV-esque gems Go For The Exit and Soggy Beavers). The project also pushes him into new and different directions, with beat band ballast (Ate It Twice), horn-laded soul (Ready To Pop), orchestral gloom (the title tracks) and pleasingly weird mini-epics (Still In Rome).
